Is Epic Universe Expansion Right Around the Corner?

Something new may already be in the works at Epic Universe, even though the park just opened. While Universal hasn’t made an official announcement, a recent permit suggests that big plans are already starting behind the scenes, something we began discussing at The Nettle back in November.

A New Permit Raises Questions

At first glance, this might seem like a normal permit. Theme parks file permits all the time for small updates or maintenance. But this one stands out.

Universal filed a permit for a “future attraction” at Epic Universe. The location listed is 4700 W Sand Lake Road in Orlando, which is a backstage area of the park. This is important because backstage areas are often used for early construction work before anything becomes visible to guests.

The permit includes work like:

  • Mass grading (preparing and leveling land)

  • Utility connections and rerouting

This type of work usually means a major project is just getting started, not a small update.

The project is also labeled “Project 680,” which appears to be a new internal name. That often means Universal is working on something that hasn’t been announced yet.

Epic Universe Was Built to Grow

Even though Epic Universe is brand new, it was never meant to stay the same forever. The park was designed with extra space for future expansions.

Universal has hinted before that more attractions are coming, even if they haven’t used the word “expansion” directly. This new permit fits perfectly with that idea.

Instead of waiting years to add something new, Universal seems to be moving quickly to keep the park fresh and exciting.

The Timing Feels Intentional

This permit comes shortly after other updates at Epic Universe, including:

On their own, these might seem like normal updates after a park opens. But together, they show that Universal isn’t slowing down.

In fact, it looks like the company is already working on the next phase of the park, which is different from how theme parks usually operate. Most parks wait years before adding major new attractions.

Here, the timeline feels much faster—and planned that way.

What Could “Project 680” Be?

Universal hasn’t shared any details yet, so we don’t know exactly what this new attraction will be. But the type of work listed in the permit gives us some clues.

Because the project involves large-scale land preparation, it’s likely something big, such as:

  • A major new ride

  • Or even a new themed area (land)

Epic Universe is known for its highly detailed and immersive experiences. That means whatever comes next will likely be just as impressive—or even bigger.

Why This Matters for Guests

If you’re planning to visit Universal Orlando in the next few years, this is something to keep an eye on.

It may not affect your trip right away, but it shows that Epic Universe is constantly changing. Future visits could feel very different as new attractions are added.

It also shows that Universal is working hard to stay competitive, especially as Disney continues to invest in its own parks.

The Big Picture

Right now, this is just a permit. There’s:

  • No official announcement

  • No concept art

  • No opening date

But in theme parks, this is often how big projects begin.

First, the land is prepared. Then construction starts. And only later does the public find out what’s coming.

That’s exactly what seems to be happening here.

Epic Universe may still be new, but Universal is already planning what comes next—and whatever “Project 680” turns out to be, it’s likely going to be something big.

As always, don’t forget to book at The Nettle for your next Orlando theme park trip!
